Where did the idea for Wahed come from?
Wahed Invest was established in 2015 by Junaid Wahedna. After a year of product development and beta testing, the company had a soft launch in September 2016.
Wahedna, an Islamic finance specialist and former financial analyst for M Capital Group, got the idea for the company after meeting a cab driver who had moved to the United States and invested all of his money in Apple stock after a mosque leader told him Apple was Sharia-compliant. He had invested $50,000 of his savings in the company with the vision of making halal investing available for the mass public.
Can anyone do it?
Wahed is already running in the US and set to launch in the UK shortly. If you're aged 18 or over and hold a UK bank account, address and National Insurance Number then you can pre-register and open up an account upon the official launch.
What do you need to get started?
Our aim is to make halal investing accessible. We are aiming to provide account minimums as low as £100 so almost anyone can become a halal investor.
What is halal investing?
A halal investment is an investment in which it is permissible for Muslims to participate according to the Islamic ethico-legal system (Shari'ah). All investments are screened for the presence of impermissible sources such as alcohol, tobacco, arms etc in addition to other financial and business screens. A certified halal investment fund is one that has been reviewed, audited and inspected. At Wahed, we have a full time Ethical Review Board that reviews our systems, business practices, and investments in order to ensure the strict Shari'ah compliance of the platform.
Any exciting plans for the future?
